Innovation: The Panda Safety Basics Catalog

Panda is proud of the newest addition to the Panda Syndicated Catalog Program—the Safety Basics Catalog. The sleek, 112-page, four-color catalog debuted in December, 2003 and will have additional runs in May and September. The comprehensive catalog features top-selling safety products from leading manufacturers in the safety industry. "We've received orders from the catalog, and that says to me that (customers) like it," added Parker. "It's a lot less intimidating for some customers, and they can find what they want without digging through a lot of choices. Safety Basics has a reasonable number of choices without being confusing." The quarterly catalog features hundreds of safety products from dozens of manufacturers and costs as little as $1.86 per book. The catalog weighs in at a svelt 11 ounces, which makes it inexpensive to mail and ideal for use as a prospecting tool for new customers.

"The major driving force for us was the economy of the Safety Basics Catalog," said Liz Parker, owner of Parker Safety, Inc. "With Safety Basics I can hand out catalogs more freely than I can with a $6 to $8 catalog."
Parker Safety was one of several distributors involved in Safety Basics’ initial run, and the Virginia-based distributor has seen the catalog work.

Panda Preferred Feature Vendor

In 1984 David Angelico and Dwayne King started building small air pumps and Breather Box™ filtration devices in Angelico’s garage in Chesapeake, Virginia. Two decades later, that small venture has blossomed into Air Systems International, a major supplier of breathing air equipment for confined space use, military, government or hazmat applications.

Air Systems’ expanding product line is created largely out of necessity. For example, when a local fire department needed a convenient way to fill air cylinders without having to return to the station, Air Systems created a trailer, which made an air filling station completely portable.

"Most of the products we manufacture come from a need or desire of an end user," explains Air Systems’ Marketing Manager Maria Rowland. "We want to make work a little easier and safer (for customers)."
Panda recognizes Air Systems International as a Panda Preferred Vendor, and Air Systems products have appeared in several Panda catalogs.

"We started because a smaller distributor took on our product line and (helped) make it what it is, and we’re supportive of both our smaller and larger distributors,” said Rowland. "Panda mutually benefits distributors and manufacturers. Smaller companies that do great business don’t have the time to make catalogs. When you have to call manufacturers, do layout, write text and get pictures it gets crazy."

Distributor Focus

In 1998 Panda introduced the groundbreaking version "A" catalog, a 168-page book that spawned Panda’s syndicated catalog program and created a new market in the safety industry. Safety Source, Inc. and Colonial Industrial Products were two of the 18 distributors that had the foresight to participate in that initial run.

Safety Source, Inc. was in just its third year of existence when President Keith Skipworth concluded that working with Panda would benefit his company.

"In order to have a catalog that presented itself well, we needed to have a nice professional look, (including) color and pricing," explained Skipworth. "To do that individually would have been in the price range of $75,000. We were a three-year-old business at the time and couldn’t justify that. We didn’t have a staff to lay the catalog out, find the right part numbers and make sure the products were up to date. Panda handled all of that."

"(The syndicated catalog) is a great tool. It's a tool that we definitely need and it's a tool that would have taken a lot of time and money to produce if we would have done it on our own."

Colonial Industrial Products

Initially, Safety Source, Inc. and Panda discussed the possibility of creating a fully customized catalog. But in the end the syndicated Panda catalog offered what Skipworth was looking for at a cost-effective price.

"It wasn’t fully customized, but (the version "A" catalog) was a good representation of the products that we had," added Skipworth. "It accomplished what we wanted to do."

Safety Source, Inc., located in Alabama, has been providing the Gulf Coast with a wide range of industrial safety products since 1995.

Richie Reggiani thought that the syndicated catalog program sounded like a good idea, so the president of Colonial Industrial Products South in Deerfield Beach, Florida signed on. The catalog program has proven valuable for the industrial safety distributor.

"It made life a lot easier. It saved us printing costs and time," said Reggiani. "We started from the beginning. Basically it’s a great tool. It’s a tool that we definitely need and it’s a tool that would have taken a lot of time and money to produce if we would have done it on our own."

Colonial Industrial Products, based in Florida, has been in business since 1988, and services an area from "the Cape to the Keys" according to Reggiani. The distributor also exports to South America and several Caribbean Islands.
